[Solar-general] duda con licencia SIL OFL

la licencia OFL (open font licence), es una licencia especial para
tipografias, compatible con la gpl y aprobada por la fsf segun creo,
la estuve leyendo y mi ingles no es lo que se dice fluido, y no
entiendo del todo, quiza en esta lista alguien me pueda ayudar a aclarar
algunos puntos

por lo que entendi, la unica diferencia con las licencia gpl, es que
la version modificada no puede incluir el nombre original o usar el
nombre del autor original para promoverla

por otro lado, la versiones modificadas pueden utilizarse
comercialmente o no?

al comienzo dice "The fonts, including any derivative works, can be
... redistributed and/or sold with any software", pueden ser utilizadas
comercialmente o no? es decir, por ejemplo vender un CD con fuentes
o derivadas (siempre que todo se lecencie bajo la misma SIL OFL)

cuando dice:
"1) Neither the Font Software nor any of its individual components,
in Original or Modified Versions, may be sold by itself."

que significa "Neither the Font Software ... may be sold by itself"?

PREAMBLE

es una licencia totalmente compatible con el software libre en cuanto
a *usar* (e incluir) esas fuentes en proyectos de software libre
(gratuitos o pagos), casi sin ninguna restriccion; o sea la licencia
de la fuente no afecta en nada a la licencia de tu software.

con respecto a las fuentes en si, ahi si no es una licencia libre: no
te permite redistribuirlas comercialmente, ni como vienen ni
modificadas por vos. solo gratis.

el truco que tiene (y que ellos mismos explican en las faq) es que no
te permite vender las fuentes *solas*, pero si combinadas con algo. o
sea que si vos pones en un cd el abiword y esta fuente (o con esta
fuente mas otras) y lo vendes, ahi si estas autorizado.

me parece una restriccion tan facilmente eludible, que ni vale la pena
ponerla. pero bueh alla ellos. y raro que la fsf la haya aceptado,
porque no es una licencia libre en cuanto a la fuente en si (no
permite el uso comercial).

si es medio rebuscado, se puede vender mientras la fuente OFL
no sea lo unico que contiene el CD, me parece que es un tema mas
bien simbolico que practico, aunque entendible

se me ocurre que la OFL debe haber sido producto de una larga
negociacion entre varias partes...
muchas de las fuentes (que son de gran calidad) desarrolladas
bajo el patrocinio de SIL, hace unos años no permitian su uso
comercial

las fuentes tipograficas creo que estan en un territorio
bastante confuso, por un lado se la puede tratar como
software, en tanto se hayan digitalizado, pero sin embargo
es dificil poder registrar sus formas, gracias a esto es que
historicamente los diseñadores de fuentes tipograficas no
hacen otra cosa que realizar pequeños agregados, reformas
o pulidos a otras fuentes ya existentes
